Bennie Ray Avens, 66, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 5, 2019. He was born on December 23, 1952, in Walters, to Loyd N. and Barbara Faye Avens.
Family visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8, from 5:30-7p.m. at Whitt Funeral Home.
A graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, at 2:00 P.M. at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery with Ron Stough, minister at Eastside Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.
Bennie graduated from Duncan High School in 1971. While in school, he worked in the Duncan Banner pressroom. In 1974, he went to work for Halliburton where he was a senior lead welder for 41 years. He married Linda Mae Lawson in Wichita Falls, Texas, on August 8, 1975. To this union, two children were born, Newly and Lindzey.
His pride and joy was raising Angus cattle. He was owner and operator of Bait Shop because of his love of fishing and fishing tournaments. But, his life was his family.
Bennie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda; children, Newly and wife Chenoa Avens of Marlow, and Lindzey and husband Ben Doyle of Duncan; grandchildren, Marshall Avens, Lawson Avens, Allie Doyle and Benjamin C. Doyle; brother, Steve Avens of the Philippines; and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Barbara Avens; and his grandparents, Benjamin and Fannie Bilbrey and William and Susie Avens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Harper, Marlon Gay, Ben Doyle, Brent Morgan, Jonathan Hajek, and Neal Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Mack Voight, Cotton Liles, Billy Harrell, Ronnie McKinnon, Harvery Mercer, Dave Watkins, Donald Troxell, and Billie Pittman.
