Louise Elliott Obituary

Doris Louise Barney Elliott passed away on August 7, 2018, at her home in Duncan. She was born on October 2, 1926, near Fort Cobb, Oklahoma to Elvin Curtis and Dorthea Alvina (Dora) Barney.

Family visitation is scheduled for Thursday, August 9, from 5:30-8:00 P.M. at Whitt Funeral Home.

Celebrations of Louise’s life are scheduled for Friday, August 10. Interment will be at 10:00 A.M. in the Duncan Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Janice Sharp officiating. There will be a Celebration of Life immediately following the memorial service in The Center. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.

Louise graduated from Washita High School in 1944 as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from The University of Oklahoma in 1948, where she was president of HESTIA and Omikron Nu honor societies and was tapped out for Mortar Board as a junior. In 1947, while a still a student at the University, she met William Elliott, who had just transferred from the New Mexico School of Mines. They were married on July 8, 1949, in Norman. After graduation she worked for the Agricultural Extension Service in Cleveland County until in the summer of 1951, when William graduated and they moved to Comanche. William worked for Halliburton and she taught in Comanche. Then, in 1953, they moved to Duncan. She continued in her teaching career, teaching at Will Rogers and Plato Elementary Schools then, in 1966, she went to Lee School to finish the spring semester and stayed for the next 21 years, retiring in 1988.

She was an active leader in both the Boy and Girl Scouting programs. At one time she was a Den Mother for a Cub Scout Troop, a Brownie Scout Troop, and a co-leader for a Girls Scout Troop. She was chosen Teacher of the Year for 1982-1983, and was awarded the Woman of Achievement by AAUW in 1992. Louise was a member of Duncan’s First United Methodist Church where she taught in the Children’s Sunday School for 5 years and taught an Adult Women’s class for 48 years. She was a charter member of the Stephens County Historical Society where she was a board member and served as secretary for 30 years. She was also a volunteer at Duncan Regional Hospital where she was recently recognized for serving 4,243 hours in the Surgery Waiting Room. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, cooking, reading, various crafts, and just being with her family and friends.

Louise said that she had 8 children – 4 that she birthed and 4 that those selected for her. She is survived by her children, Robert Scott and wife Susan Elliott of Duncan, Randal Craig and wife Lana Elliott of Oklahoma City, Carol Ann and husband Randal Rochell of Duncan, and Cynthia Lou and husband Kenny Zachary of Ringling; 8 grandchildren, Chris and wife Melanie Elliott, Coy Elliott, Blake and wife Rana Rochell, Ryan and wife Sarah Rochell, Elaine Elliott, Anna Elliott, Dakota and wife Mahlia Zachary , and Jenny-Lu and husband B.W. Savage; 4 great grandchildren, Violet Elliott, Rhett Rochell, Westlyn Zachary, and baby girl Zachary due in December; and extended family and friends, as well as her coffee group and the Duncan Regional Hospital staff and volunteer team.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Elliott; her parents; and brothers, Charles Barney and Robert (Bob) Barney.

Memorial contributions can be made in Louise’s name to the American Cancer Society, Stephens County Historical Society, Oklahoma Medical Research, or to the music fund at the First United Methodist Church in Duncan.
