Mildred Erwin Obituary

Mildred Marie Erwin, of Duncan, was born June 6, 1922, in Idabel, Oklahoma to William A. and Beulah (Hankins) Hopkins. She passed away on Thursday, February 1, at the age of 95.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, February 5, at 2:00 P.M. in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.

Mildred Erwin was a force of nature. She grew up in a family that farmed for a living. She had many tales of growing up on the farms and helping to raise her younger siblings and nephews. Some of her fondest memories of her childhood were with her brother, Calvin, climbing trees and getting into mischief. She dated Tommy Erwin some in high school, but a war was on and Tommy went off to the service and Mildred moved to Dallas to live with her sister Lucille, and her husband, James Ross, and son, Barry. An article came out in the Wewoka paper on how to write to the local boys that were in the service. Her mother mailed her the article and she started writing Tommy and the love story began. When he was able to take a leave, he came thru Dallas and got her and they rode a train to Wewoka where they married at the courthouse on June 1, 1943. The war ended and upon returning home, they moved to Duncan where he worked for Mobil Oil and she worked for Halliburton. They had three daughters. In 1965, Tommy was transferred to Lindsay. Mildred drove back and forth to Halliburton until she retired. Later she went to work for B&B Tool in Lindsay. After Tommy’s passing in 1983, Mildred returned to Duncan in 1985 to be near her grandchildren. She spent time traveling and attending dances with her sisters and close friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a wonderful cook and tried to feed everyone that came thru the door. She loved to shop, read, work puzzles, and take care of her family. She had two very good life-long friends, Jenny Choate (Aunt Jenny) and Mary Kate Bourland, whom she adored. Mildred was an independent, determined, selfless hard worker who literally ate an apple a day, and it kept the doctor away for 95 years. She loved her family dearly, and will be missed by all that knew her. We love you Mom.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Thomas (Tommy) Erwin; her parents, William and Beulah Hopkins; brothers, Hubert Hopkins and Calvin Hopkins; and sisters, Lucille Ross and Beatrice Terrell Harjo.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Sandra Gentry of Duncan, Pam Erwin and Lana Erwin, both of Edmond; her grandchildren, Chris and wife Michele Gentry, and Tara Gentry and husband Sean Troncoso; her brother, Don Hopkins; and her sisters, Lorene Lacer and Pat Shipley Coulon.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mildred’s name to Chisholm Trail Hospice or Stephens County Humane Society.
