Sue Carole Brown (nee Thompson) passed from this life on June 14, 2019, at
age 93. She was born at the family home south of Comanche, OK on September 28,
1925 to Idus Paul Thompson and Joseph Haydee Thompson (nee Smithson) and was
the fifth of 5 children in the family.
At 16 years of age, Sue graduated from Comanche High School in the spring of 1942 as the class valedictorian. Shortly thereafter, she began work at Tinker Air base, and did
repair work on B-17 bomber radios. In 1943 she left Oklahoma and traveled to Uniontown, Kentucky and married Bud Brown, who was employed by an oil drilling
company. They returned to Oklahoma in 1944 and later lived in California before
finally returning to Oklahoma in the late 40’s. They bought a farm east of Comanche lake and raised cattle until retirement. When Bud passed away in March 2014, they had been married for almost 71 years.
Sue had a very busy and varied life; she was a wife, mother of two, and a successful
businesswoman. Her first job outside the home was as a grocery clerk at Kinder
IGA in Comanche. She worked a short time in the typing pool at Halliburton in
Duncan. She spent many years working for John Hopper at Ready-To-Print
Advertising in Duncan. When he retired, she obtained a real estate broker license
and she and Bud started an independent insurance agency in Comanche. When Bud began building homes, she started the Comanche Decorating Center and sold paint,
floor coverings and shades until retirement.
Sue recognized the fact that women faced more obstacles than men in the business
arena, and she was very active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She
held several county and state officer positions in that organization. She was never afraid of new challenges, and was focused and determined to achieve each goal she set for herself. Obstacles were merely opportunities for creativity. In modern terms it could be said “Nevertheless, she persisted”. When any of her family needed assistance, she stepped up to help without hesitation and without judgment. Sue set a good example of character, fortitude, honesty, resilience and grit for all that knew her.
Retirement from the town business and the sale of their cattle allowed for much
deserved time for their life-long hobby of camping and fishing. They spent many summer weeks in Red River and Eagle’s Nest in New Mexico; as well as fall trips
to the Swinging Bridge camp in Arkansas.
She is survived by son James Howard Brown and wife Marsha of Phoenix, AZ;
daughter Carole Jeanne Brown and husband Tommy Gunn of Lawton, OK;
grandchildren James Steven Brown, Jeffrey Blaine Brown, Joseph Carroll Brown, Susan Payne Brown, all of Phoenix, AZ, Lauren Brown Morley and husband Brian of Ellicott City, MD, and Heather Burns of Fort Smith, AR.
