Our sweet, precious sister Barbara departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 23, 2025 at the age of 84.
Barbara had heart problems from infancy. She was recently referred to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in consultation for heart surgery. Numerous tests revealed that she was not a good candidate with strength enough to undergo the necessary surgery. Barbara accepted the decision to abandon the plan for surgery and was transferred to the Integris Hospice House in OKC. She wanted to go home to Duncan, but she was too weak to travel. She lived in hospice care for two days.
Every day that she spent in OKC, Barbara talked with her brother Bob in Wichita, KS by telephone. She also had visits from friends while she was confined. She stayed in touch with her loved ones.
Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, May 30, at the East Side Church of Christ with Ron Stough officiating. Interment will follow in the New Velma Cemetery under the direction of the Whitt Funeral Home.
Barbara Sue Nelson was born on the 29th day of July in 1940. She was the delight of her family: Walter James Nelson and his wife Maudie (Miller) Nelson, and their two-year-old son, Bobby James Nelson. They lived in Velma, Oklahoma, where they had businesses and the children rode the school bus to the Velma-Alma campus. The businesses were a Drive-in Theater, a Fabric Store, a Drive-in Restaurant, and a trucking company. When Bobby and Barbara were growing up, they observed and learned from their parents. James was also a builder of houses; he moved the family to their new home at "Alma Corner" - just east of Velma on Hwy. 8 - where Bobby and Barbara grew up. In 1956, an exciting year in the Nelson household, Bobby entered his freshman year at Oklahoma State University and Barbara married Dwayne Anderson. Dwayne was a new graduate from OSU with a degree in geology. In the early years of their marriage, they moved several times as there were changes in the oil companies he served, and Barbara was employed as a dental hygienist.
In October of 1964 their lives were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kristy. Barbara and Dwayne said their greatest loss was Heaven's gain when Kristy died in a car accident in January of 1986.
Barbara found her greatest delight in being a devoted homemaker. Plus, she and Dwayne were active members of Eastside Church of Christ in Duncan, where both served on the Mission Committee.
After a fight with cancer, Dwayne died in their home and was buried next to Kristy in the family plots at the New Velma Cemetery, where Barbara will join them today. Everyone who knew Barbara Anderson loved her, and she will always represent true love in our hearts.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, James and Maudie Nelson; husband, Dwayne Anderson; and daughter, Kristy Anderson. Survivors include brother, Bob J. Nelson and his wife Judy; niece, Dawn Angela Nelson; and several cousins.
Honoring Barbara Sue Anderson as a faithful member, a memorial gift may be made in her name to East Side Church of Christ in Duncan.
