Bob S. "Hershell" Mitchell, 88, was born June 24, 1936, in Duncan, Oklahoma to W.B. "Cotton" Mitchell and Alice Jones Mitchell. He passed away on September 19, 2024, in Duncan, Oklahoma.

The family will receive visitors at Whitt Funeral Home on Monday, September 23, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, September 24, at 2:30 P.M. in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel.

Bob grew up in Velma where his dad worked in the oilfield. After grade school and graduation from Velma-Alma High School, Bob went on to graduate from college at Central State University. Further education earned him a Master's Degree from Central State University, and later, Bob earned a degree in Administration from the University of Oklahoma.

His teaching career began in Oklahoma City at various schools including Grant High School, Southeast High School, and Webster Jr. High School. He served as counselor for Comanche High School and then finished his career at Tuttle, retiring as Principal in 1985. While he was at Tuttle, he initiated the wrestling program. Since then, Tuttle has won 8 state championships.

Bob was a people person and never met a stranger. He loved to camp and travel and enjoyed sports and fishing. He loved talking football and was an avid OSU fan, "Go Pokes"! Bob was a member of the Duncan Antique Car Club, Coaches Association, Coffee Club, Stephens County Retired Educators Association, and NARO. Bob's real passion was his generosity helping so many to continue their education and meet their basic needs.

On April 18, 1991, Bob married Harriet Bonner in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Duncan with Rev. Phil Wahl officiating. They enjoyed many good years of marriage before Harriet's passing in 2018. Later that year, God blessed him with a new season of life at the Velma All-School reunion when he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Sylvia (McMurtry) England. They were married December 4, 2018 and shared the past six years together. Bob passed away from a brief illness on the same day, just six hours after Sylvia passed.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Harriet; wife, Sylvia; brothers, Robert, Pat and Donald Ray; and sisters: Billie, Imogene, Lela, and Juanita.

Survivors include his beloved nieces and nephews and extended family: Jolene Morgan and Brenda Brackin.
