Bobby Joe Mitchell, 87, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026. He was born on March 12, 1938, in Duncan to Joe Samuel and Ruth (Harkey) Mitchell, who instilled in him the values of hard work, loyalty, and family that shaped his entire life.
After graduating high school, Bobby proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. His service reflected the quiet strength and dedication that he carried into every chapter of his life. Bobby spent his career working in maintenance for Southwestern Bell and AT&T, where he was known for his reliability, skill, and steady presence.
Outside of work, he found joy in the things that spoke to his spirit-horses, the open air, and the craft of making ropes. His love for anything involving horses was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong passion that brought him peace and purpose.
On September 3, 1987, Bobby married the love of his life, Shirley Allred, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Together they built a life grounded in partnership, laughter, and a deep devotion to family. Above all, Bobby cherished time with his children and especially his grandchildren. Whether sharing stories, teaching a skill, or simply being present, he created memories that will be held close for generations.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Shirley; children: Brad Mitchell and wife Sandy of Duncan, Stacy Zuniga and husband Cecil of Lawton, Dustene Jessen and husband Lawrence of Comanche, Donna Darity Gayland of Velma, Brenda Rodriguez of Duncan; former son-in-law, Jay Rodriguez of Duncan; grandchildren: Justin Jessen, Zach Jessen, Austin Jessen, Jaci Jessen, Delaney O'Dell, Austin Mitchell, Brenley Mitchell, Breanna Harris, Samuel Harris, Garrett Harris, Lacy Darity, Lana Johnson, Erick Rodriguez, Kristina Rodriguez; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Curtis Mitchell; and sister, Janetta Willis.
Funeral services are planned for 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 15, at the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Leonard Keele officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery with Jay Rodriguez, Austin Mitchell, Broedy Jessen, Erick Rodriguez, Brad Mitchell, and Lawrence Jessen serving as pallbearers.
