Charlene Schick Sullivan Obituary
Charlene Schick Sullivan, 96, of Duncan, passed away January 4, 2025. Charlene was born on August 29, 1928, to Flossie (Smith) and Charles B. Schick in Duncan. Charlene graduated from Duncan High School in 1946 where she was Homecoming Queen and, as Smokerings Editor, in conjunction with the Crossman Printing Company, established the Crossman Award, which is still given annually to an outstanding Duncan High Graduate.
She attended Oklahoma A & M College (OSU) and was a member of the Orange & Black Quill, Aggie Princess, and selected as one of 25 students nationally to attend the Merrill-Palmer Institute. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority which continued throughout her life in the Pi Beta Phi Alumni Club (former President and Diamond Arrow honoree); as Omicron Nu (Oklahoma and Arkansas) Province President; and recipient of the 1998 Evelyn Peters Kyle Angel Award. She graduated in 1950 with a degree in Home Economics with special emphasis on child development and guidance and a lifetime teaching certificate.
She married Patrick (Pat) Dellis Sullivan, who she met in the second grade at Emerson school, in the First Christian Church, where she was a member from 1936 to 2025, in 1950. They lived in Norman while Pat finished law school, returned to Duncan for a short time until Pat was drafted into the Army Air Corps, and returned permanently in 1954, the same day their daughter was born. She ran her own nursery school from 1951 to 1968 in San Antonio and Duncan.
She was a faithful, loyal, and proud supporter of all things Duncan. Throughout her life she was active with numerous organizations, including: the Jaycee Janes, the Girl Scouts, Boy Scout Troop 417, PEO, Hestian Study Club, the Stephens County Museum (Founder's Day Queen 2021), Main Street of Duncan, Youth Services of Stephens County, and Starlighter's and Carousel Dance Clubs. She was instrumental in establishing Kiddieland and spearheaded the renovation of the ASCOG clock.
From her students to those helped by her civic involvement, her busy little footsteps made giant tracks for the future of Duncan on her journey through life. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Pat; son, Kelly (14); and daughter, Kay Lyn (70). She is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Scott (Denise) and granddaughter, Delaney of Edmond; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert D. (Sharon) Schick, of Duncan; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
A joint celebration life service for Charlene, and her daughter, Kay Lyn, will be held Saturday, February 22 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church of Duncan. Memorial donations in Charlene's name may be made to the First Christian Church, the Stephens County Historical Museum, or a charity your choice.
