Dorothy Land Obituary
Dorothy Hodge Land, joined her husband and Jesus in Heaven December 17, 2024. Her remaining family was able to gather around her to give their love and say goodbye for now. She was born in Cleveland, Oklahoma, June 17, 1926 to John and Lucy Hodge.
Dorothy married John Roy Land on June 13, 1943 shortly before he shipped out of New Orleans to New Guinea in WWII. While he was serving, she gave birth to their first daughter and they waited for "Daddy to come home". Their second daughter was born just before the Korean War. John went back into the Army and Dorothy became the wife of a Company Commander. After his discharge, they moved back to Oklahoma for John to finish an engineering degree at Oklahoma A&M before he started to work for Halliburton in Duncan, Oklahoma. Now Dorothy was an oil field widow. She was the epitome of the stay-at-home Mom. She made all the clothes she and her daughters wore as well as incredible embroidered pieces and quilts.
After John retired, they spent a lot of time in Port Aransas chasing the flounder. Something most people don't know is that Dorothy graduated with the first class in the new high school at Duncan in 1961. She was supposed to graduate the day she was in the hospital having her first daughter. When she decided to go back to school in 1960, she couldn't just get a GED and had to actually attend classes in the new building. Because of this, Dorothy was able to double date to the Jr./Sr. prom with her daughter who was a Junior at the high school at the same time.
She is preceded in death by husband, John Roy Land; daughter, Mary Alice Fallin; her husband, Robert Fallin; son, Michael Fallin; and infant Mary. She was also preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
Dorothy is survived by daughter, Kathryn Ann Ventura and husband, Nick; grandson, John (Brad) Latham and wife Elaine (Hockley, Texas); granddaughter, Cecelia (Ventura) Morris, husband Robert; great-grandchildren: Emma, Nic, Ben and Dean Morris (Forney, Texas); granddaughter NikkiAnn Ventura (Farmers Branch, Texas); and brother-in-law, Gayle Rethford (Rockport, Texas).
She was a quiet, caring person, active in her children's lives-Brownies, Girl Scouts, school activities and church at Crestview Christian Church. Dorothy was always ready to help family, friends, or neighbors. She never wanted to bother anyone with her problems and appreciated the kindness of others. She was also intelligent and very well read, ready to cheer on her family's successes without attracting attention to herself. She leaves behind a legacy of love.
A funeral service is planned for 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Whitt Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers are Nick Ventura, NikkiAnn Ventura, John (Brad) Latham, Robert Morris, Marty Kaus, Jason McNutt.
