Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.

Eva Jane Givens Harris was born November 8, 1928 in her grandparents’ home, Eva Cora and George Shults, near Snyder, Oklahoma. Her parents were Golda (Shults) and Ross Givens.

She graduated from Manitou High School and attended college at Abilene Christian University. Eva Jane married Gordon M. Harris on November 24, 1947 in Tipton, Oklahoma and, after moving to Duncan, worked at Halliburton for seven years before Lanna and Ragan, her children, was born.

Eva Jane was an active member of several organizations including the Duncan Music Club, Duncan Regional Hospital Auxiliary serving as president, and the Literacy Council also serving as president, and the Philomathic Study Club.

One honor she was especially proud of was being named Duncan’s First Centennial Lady, chosen from a slate of many other outstanding women in the community.

Eva Jane was a 3-time cancer survivor. She was always positive and never complained and practiced “Faith over Fear!” She continued to support and promote the American Cancer Society for many years, whenever possible. She NEVER GAVE UP.

When her children became of school age, she and her husband, Gordon, started a new business, Harris Insurance Agency. She was co-owner and manager for 25 years.

Eva Jane was raised in church and loved her parents and family. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ – Northside from 1955 to 1984 and currently at Chisholm Trail, where for 40 years she sang in the chorus and for many funerals and weddings. As an active member and volunteer, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School over a period of 35 years, attended workshops yearly for Bible school teachers at Abilene Christian University, served as Coordinator for the Bible school supply room and for the Pre-School Department. She also volunteered in the church library, participated in devotional groups for nursing homes on Sunday afternoons and volunteered at the Compassion Health Clinic.

As much as she enjoyed volunteering in her community and her memberships in various clubs, one of her favorite things to do was travel with her children. She traveled internationally many times. She also traveled the United States, but her favorite was New York City, especially the Broadway shows and museums. She loved music and art.

Eva Jane is survived by her children: Lanna Harris of Duncan, Ragan and wife Paula Harris of Norman; step-grandchildren: Brian Wright, Derrick Wright; sister, Gayle and Hugh Baker; sister-in-law, Evelyn Harris Cheek; nephews: Greg Harris, Greg Givens, Lyle Baker; nieces: Linda Jane Mathis, Lynn Givens; Loyce Davis, Lanae Rainey; and numerous other family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon M. Harris; parents, Golda and Ross Givens; and her brother, Duane Givens.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Claudia, Sadie and Lupe for the loving care they provided to Eva Jane.
