Evelyn Slifer Obituary

Evelyn Mary (Smith) Slifer, 94, died peacefully Thursday, November 18, 2021. She was born in Beecher City, Illinois to Arnold A. Smith and Cora May (Patton) Smith. Evelyn spent her childhood in Beecher City. She graduated from Beecher City High School in 1945. She attended Sparks Business College in Shelbyville, Illinois where she met the love of her life, Carl Slifer, and married April 16, 1949. Carl passed January 3, 2021.

Evelyn was a full-time mother to the boys, Dan and Rick, and lived most of her married life in Duncan, Oklahoma. When the boys began junior high, Evelyn decided to work outside of the home for Paul’s Manufacturing Co. for numerous years as a bookkeeper. She was so adept at bookkeeping she kept Carl’s mowing bills to send to clients for 40 years.

She was very active in First Christian Church of Duncan. She attended Sunday school, Christian Women's Fellowship, and participated in serving dinners and luncheons at the church. She taught Sunday school in 1982-86 for 2-3 year olds. Evelyn and Carl had many friends and every Friday night the group would meet at various places to eat and catch up on what was happening. They were church friends for decades.

In earlier years, she and Carl enjoyed square dancing. She served as a volunteer for numerous years for Meals on Wheels and Duncan Hospital. She loved to knit and various new mothers had beautiful blankets Evelyn tenderly knitted.

Her true delights were her four grandchildren: Pam (Slifer) Hays, Sarah (Slifer) Clark, Seth Slifer, and Dana (Slifer) Royer. Her great-grandchildren brought such joy to her face: Henry Clark, Charlie Clark, Carl Royer, and Penny Slifer.

She is survived by her son, Danny Slifer (Loretta); son, Rick Slifer (Paula); and daughter-in-law, Suwanna Riley (Gilbert). She is also survived by her four grandchildren, her four great grandchildren, and many step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Whitt Funeral Home at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 30 and Memorial Funeral Service at 1:00 PM at First Christian Church, Duncan, Oklahoma. Interment will be at the Duncan Cemetery.
