Freddie LaVerne Hicks was born on July 24, 1937, in Seminole, Oklahoma, the eldest child of Cecil and Ethel (Cruise) Hicks. He passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023, in Chickasha with his family at his side.
His father worked in the oil industry so the family moved to Osage County when Freddie was young. They finally settled in the Elmore City area where Freddie attended school in Lindsay and graduated from Elmore City High School.
He met the love of his life, Edna Crowder, in Elmore City and the couple were married there on October 13, 1955. To this union were born three children, Julia Ann, Marcia Kay, and Freddie LaVerne Junior.
Freddie worked in construction for the O.L. Olson construction company where he was a welder. He helped to build several gas plants in Texas and Oklahoma. The family moved to Gracemont, Oklahoma in 1961, where he worked for his father-in-law, John Crowder. He was instrumental in building telephone networks in several Oklahoma counties. He remained in the telephone business for the remainder of his career, retiring from Telephone and Data Systems (TDS) in 1999.
He enjoyed traveling with his family, camping, and fishing. He loved photography, any kind of technology, gardening, and woodworking.
Freddie is survived by his wife, Edna, of the home and children: Julia and Dale Clift of Cement, Oklahoma; Marcia and Randy Harmon of Anadarko, Oklahoma, Freddie Junior and Rosemary, of Lubbock, Texas; grandchildren: Dustin and Missy Chrismon, of Cyril, Oklahoma; Jennifer and Matt Sanders, of Gracemont, Oklahoma; Cole and Kalyn Chrismon, of Anadarko, Oklahoma; Ronnie and Randi Clift, of Cement, Oklahoma, Dala and Rick Schwenk, of Ninnekah, Oklahoma; Brandie Clift, of Cement; Alden Cogburn, of Cement; Maranda and Adam Ryburn, of Mustang, Oklahoma; Nathan Harmon, of Cyril, Oklahoma; René and Michelle Jimenez, of Scottsdale, Arizona; brother: Buddy and Helen Hicks, of Pernell, Oklahoma; sister, Coleen Childress, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Carolyn Slagle, of Valliant, Oklahoma; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Ethel Hicks, of Elmore City, Oklahoma; and one great-granddaughter, Lyndsey Clift Birch, of Gracemont, Oklahoma.
The family will greet visitors on Sunday, April 30, between 2:00-4:00 P.M. at the Cyril Funeral Home. Funeral services are planned for Monday, May 1, at 10:00 A.M. at the Cyril Church of Christ with Douglas Graham, minister, officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Dustin Chrismon, Cole Chrismon, Nathan Harmon, Alden Cogburn, Matt Sanders, and Adam Ryburn; honorary pallbearers are René Jimenez, Sebastian Chrismon, and Jackson Harmon. Interment will follow in the Cement Cemetery under the direction of Cyril Funeral Home.
