Herb attended Alden schools and Central Catholic High School. He owned a farm where he raised cattle, wheat and cotton. During wheat harvest time, he would harvest from Oklahoma to Montana. He was elected to the Apache Farmers Co-op Board in 1973 and appointed president in 1979, a position he held for 6 years. He retired from the board in 1985. He loved to raise a garden and did so until he was 102. At 103, he still drove a vehicle and had amazing penmanship. He was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and served as their bookkeeper. He also helped to rebuild the steeple at the church after it burned and he mowed the church lawn for many years. He read The Anadarko Daily News, The Lawton Constitution, and The Apache News daily/weekly. Herb enjoyed playing dominoes and won many championships trophies. He loved to do woodworking/cabinetry projects and repairing guns and fishing poles. Herb also enjoyed deer hunting and had traveled to New Mexico to hunt. He enjoyed his friend, Jed Denton, who came frequently to visit him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janet Hemming; brothers George Hemming, John Hemming, James Hemming, Edward Hemming; sister Mary Douchinsky; and stepsons, Wayne Hudgins and Jerry Hudgins.

Herb is survived by his stepchildren: Lois and husband Myron Murray of Marlow and Jane Bradford of Asotin, Washington; 4 grandchildren including Brian Murray and Karin and husband Bryan Brantley, all of Marlow; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
