James Herbert Gardner was born June 27, 1936, in Duncan, Oklahoma to Oscar and Florence (Grisham) Gardner. He passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2020, in Oklahoma City at the age of 83.
Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, June 2, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the visitation hall of Whitt Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, at 10:00 A.M. in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Earl Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at the Duncan Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Fewell, Tony Yarbrough, Tim Gardner, David Gardner, Earl Gardner and Tim Jennings. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.
Jim graduated from Empire High School. He served as a patrol officer, detective, and sergeant for the Dallas Police Department for 30 years, retiring in 1994. After his retirement, he returned to serve as a bailiff. He loved fishing, watching OU football, gardening, and spending time with his family.
Along with his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Shari Hogan; infant grandson, Anthony Robert Gardner; sisters: Emma Gardner, Deane Magness, Ruby Anderson, Halleen Newman; brothers: Orland Gardner, Bill Gardner; and sister-in-law, Margie Gardner.
Jim is survived by his children: Tim and wife Julie Gardner of Duncan; Tony and wife JoAnn Yarbrough of Amarillo, Texas; David and wife Sandra Gardner of Avery, Texas; Stacy Gardner of Duncan; grandchildren: Quinn Blair, LeAnne Neish, Kharma Sloan, Anna Gardner, Kortni Yarbrough, Hope Yarbrough, Faith Yarbrough, Aaron Gardner, Allison Farmer, Jake Farmer, Amber Jennings; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Gus Gardner; and many nieces and nephews.
