Jerry Mitchell Obituary

Dr. Jerry Allen Mitchell Sr. was born March 3, 1940 in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma to Fred Laveritis and Anna Lou (Spurgeon) Mitchell. He passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021, with his family at his side at his home in Duncan. He was 81.

He graduated from Hennessey, Oklahoma public school. While in high school he played football. He also loved Western History. After graduation he attended Oklahoma State University where he earned his DVM. He studied diseases and how they were transferred. He was a member of the ROTC program at OSU. He loved to read. He then worked for several years for different veterinarians before he opened his own veterinary clinic where he cared for all kinds of animals. He later became a state inspector for Oklahoma and a speaker at the veterinary conventions.

Jerry married Peggy Lou Gordon in New Mexico in 1997. He was a member of the Audubon Society. He loved to travel to watch birds and had traveled through Canada to Alaska. He found many different types of birds in North America which he photographed and kept a journal about them. While in Canada, he and Peggie also visited a goldmine in Dawson. He also loved to hunt. He would go by himself, taking his horses and dogs, to New Mexico for many weeks at a time to hunt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Donald Mitchell and Tommy Mitchell.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Peggie; children: Fred and wife Tina Mitchell of Vernal, Utah; Jerry Jr. and wife Shelley Mitchell of Marlow, Justin Brammer of Duncan, John and wife Mary Brammer of Weatherford, Texas; grandchildren: Ethan Mitchell, Jesse Mitchell, Colt Mitchell, Ryder Mitchell, Rylan and wife Maddie Brammer, Kaylee Brammer, Jack Brammer, Jonah Brammer; sister, Janis Schultz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There are no services planned at this time. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home/Oakcrest Cremation Center.
