John Donald Johnston, 90, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 8, 2025. He was born January 13, 1936, in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, to Rebecca (McGlaslin) Esquivias. He was adopted and raised by Buddy Johnston. John was a proud member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe, a heritage he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
John lived a life defined by hard work, creativity, and wholehearted authenticity. He served proudly in the National Guard and spent his working years in construction, specializing in awnings-a craft he approached with skill and pride.
A man of many passions, John had a deep love for art and created illuminated manuscripts, finding beauty in detail and history. He adored his cat and dog, who were constant companions. He enjoyed the simple thrill of riding and driving-whether it was a tow truck or his battery power trike-and he never lost the joy of being on the move.
Music was one of John's lifelong comforts. He cherished classical music, especially Beethoven, whose compositions stirred something profound in him. He also loved listening to Reba McEntire, whose voice brought him happiness and familiarity. He also played the mountain dulcimer.
John was full of life-vibrant, determined, and unwavering in his beliefs. He gave everything he had to the people and pursuits he cared about. Those who knew him will remember his spirit, his sincerity, and the way he lived exactly as he believed.
A visitation is planned for Thursday, April 16, at Whitt Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Funeral services are planned for 10:00 A.M., Friday, April 17, in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Saundra Chatfield officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cemetery in Red Rock, Oklahoma.
