Edna Juanita (Babe) Brown, 88, passed away on October 21, 2023, in Duncan, Oklahoma. She was born in Hastings, Oklahoma, on December 30, 1934 to Charles Craig (Chick) Ely and Rebecca Loving Giddens Ely. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1952.
She married Billy J. Brown on June 7, 1952. When he was drafted for the Korean War and sent to Washington, Babe rode the train for 3 days to join him. Upon his honorable discharge in 1954, they returned to Oklahoma with 6-month-old Karen and all their worldly possessions crammed in their Studebaker. They moved to Duncan in 1956 and quickly made it their home. Bill worked for the Ford Motor Company on Main Street, and they became charter members of Parkview Baptist Mission. They purchased their first home on S. 14th before Karen started kindergarten. Patrick finally arrived in 1965 and made the family complete.
Juanita worked for Universal Fidelity Life Insurance Company as an underwriter, served as the secretary for Parkview Baptist Church and the Mullins Association, and later volunteered in the office at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Juanita excelled at many crafts. She enjoyed ceramics, tole painting, and wood crafts, which she gifted to family and friends and later sold in local craft booths for many years. Then she discovered basket weaving and wove many beautiful baskets for family and friends until her health declined in 2022. She also made several quilts before suffering a stroke in 2013.
Juanita was a member of New Hope Baptist Church West at the time of her death. She previously attended Parkview Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School classes for many years and Immanuel Baptist Church, which was built on land donated by her grandparents, James and Effie Mae Ely.
Juanita is survived by Bill, her devoted husband of 71 years; daughter Karen Lowe and husband Tom, Durant, OK; son Patrick Brown, Oklahoma City; sister Ruth Schreiner, Duncan; sister Phyllis Beal, San Antonio, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Evelyn Randolph Ely; and son-in-law, Gary Lollock.
Juanita will be remembered for her loving, generous nature and the courage she mustered to battle through all the illnesses, surgeries, broken bones, and loss of most of her hearing, speech, and independence.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people at Wilkins Nursing Home and Comforting Hands Hospice who took such great care of Babe.
