Laveta Ann Fortney, 91, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, in Lawton, Oklahoma, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 27, 1934, in Apache, Oklahoma, to William and Annabell (Bynum) McBride.
Laveta grew up in Apache and graduated from Apache High School in 1952. She was proud to be a member of the school's first women's basketball team, a point of pride she carried throughout her life. After high school, she worked in various office positions, including roles with Martin-Marietta on Fort Sill, Kroger, and Coca-Cola, where she was known for her strong work ethic and friendly spirit.
She married Robert "Bob" Wise, and together they raised two children, Patricia "Patti" and Robert "Bob." Laveta was a devoted mother who created a warm and steady home for her family. Later in life, on August 27, 1982, Laveta married Jessie "David" Fortney. Their marriage was filled with love, partnership, and joy until David's passing on June 4, 2015.
Laveta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David; great-grandson, Xavier Wise; daughter-in-law, Sharla Wise; brother, Bill McBride; brother-in-law, Leo Drake; and nephew, David Nickelson.
Survivors include her children: Patti Huffaker and husband Richard, Bob Wise; grandchildren: Danny Lindsey Jr. (Mary), Kristen Molloy (Aaron), Sarah Mansel (Amy), Tina Keough (Karl), Angie Lemley (Chris), Jamie Wise, Erica Wise; great-grandchildren: Tito Lindsey (Chanda), Taylor Baker (JD), Danny Lindsey III, Ariah Pickett (Shawn), Aleigha Wilson, Arrianna Wise, Hunter Molloy, Maddux Molloy, Tylor Roberts, Trista Gray, Ketsiyah Wise, Ashley Cox, and Codi Powell; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include sisters: Nadine Drake, Florine Orf (Ron), Mona Lynch (Don); numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends and family: sister-in-law, Ginger Wise and Terry Partee.
A funeral service is planned for Monday, March 23, at 10:00 A.M., in the Apache First Baptist Church with Mike Keahbone officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
