Leon Hawkins Obituary

Leon Clifford Hawkins Sr., of Duncan, Oklahoma, was born December 11, 1932 in Binger, Oklahoma to Marion Claude and Nora Jane (Sexton) Hawkins. He received his heavenly promotion Thursday, July 21, 2022.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, July 24, between 2:00 and 4:00 P.M. at Whitt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 25, at the Unity Missionary Baptist Church with his son, Cliff Hawkins, officiating, assisted by Pastor David McAllister. Interment will follow at the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home.

Leon attended school in Western Oklahoma and received his Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Missionary Baptist Institute in Marlow. He married Mallie "Ruth" Hawkins on October 11, 1951 at Hobart, Oklahoma. He served as a Military Chaplain's Assistant for the US Army from 1955 to 1957 when he was honorably discharged. On September 10, 1961 Leon, Ruth, Pamela Ruth who was 3-1/2 years old, and Leon Clifford (Cliff) Jr. who was celebrating his first birthday, crossed the border to begin their adventure in the mission work in Mexico. His love for Mexican Mission was evident in spending his life working in the interior of Mexico with a young family that lived thru many adventures. They moved to Texas in 1968 and continued their mission work along the Mexico/Texas border, Kingsville, Texas, and Glenwood, Arkansas. After the passing of Ruth in 2014, Leon married Joyce Young in 2015 at Duncan. She passed away in 2021.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing; however, his heart was in his mission work. He loved watching westerns and wrestling.

Leon is survived by his children: Pam and husband Darrell Jones of Duncan, Leon Clifford "Cliff" Jr. and Karon Hawkins of Broken Arrow, Lisa and husband Chuck Copeland of Duncan; 4 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth Hawkins and Joyce Hawkins; parents; and 13 brothers and sisters: Jack Jewel Hawkins, Rachel Lorine Hatfield, Arthur Meldon Hawkins, Vera Mae Teague, William Thomas Hawkins, Opal Oleta Shaw, Lucy Merl Elliot, Ruby Myrtle Elliot, Ruthie Lee Taylor, Claudie Carl Hawkins, Everett Earl Hawkins, Alvin Virgil Hawkins, and Francis Eldon Hawkins.
