Louise Galey Obituary

Louise (Freeman) Galey was born on March 3, 1935 in Prairie Grove, Arkansas to parents Verona Pearl and Wes Freeman. As the last of seven children, she began life in Wagoner, Oklahoma where her mother, a very savvy business woman, had a chicken hatchery and rental property, and her father trucked hay to local farmers.

Despite humble beginnings, Louise’s natural musical gifts presented themselves early in life. Her first vocal solo was given at age 5 in her Pentecostal Holiness Church, and at age 6, she began voice and piano lessons. By high school graduation, Louise had given superior performances in school musicals, various churches, and competitions (including state!).

By age 18, Louise’s parents had moved with her to Tahlequah, Oklahoma to let her begin a bachelor’s degree in Music Education at Northeastern State University. It was the summer before her freshman year that a neighbor introduced her to a handsome young Christian man, Joe H. Galey. Perhaps it was his warm personality, his deep, gentle voice, or just his blue suede shoes (!) that made her fall in love, so she married him on June 1, 1955 in Tahlequah.

Louise continued her education at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha until the couple finally settled in Duncan to begin raising their three children – Alan, Loran, and Susan. Since those early days, Louise prided herself on being an excellent wife and mother, a loyal member of her church, and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Throughout it all, music was a constant love, demonstrated by giving private voice and piano lessons, participating in or directing church choirs (including First Methodist of Coffeyville, Kansas) and even performing a recital after a junior college course at age 40! Through each of these ways, Louise deepened her love of music and joyfully shared her talents. And what a gifted woman she was!

Also noteworthy is Louise’s 40-year-long “little ministry,” as she called it. After collecting newspaper articles or photos about local residents, she would laminate and present them to each person with a note of praise or encouragement, each gift being a gesture from her heart and an opportunity to share God’s love.

After a battle with heart failure, Louise was supported by family and friends as she transitioned with grace and dignity into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Chisholm Trail Assisted Living, Duncan. Loved ones who have been eagerly awaiting her arrival in Heaven include her husband, Joe; son, Alan Joseph Galey; her parents; and all of her siblings.

Louise is survived by son, Loran Galey and wife Sheila of Bella Vista, AR; daughter, Susan Galey Christhilf and husband Malcolm of Springboro, PA; grandchildren: Matthew Galey and Danielle Galey of Albuquerque, NM; Melissa Galey and husband Matt Moore of Indianapolis, IN; Madeline Galey of Dallas, TX; and Bryson Christhilf of Charleston, SC; and great granddaughter, Savannah Galey of Albuquerque, NM.

Services will be held on Friday, August 19, at 10:00 A.M. in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Bryan Pain officiating. Interment will be in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.
