Martha King Obituary

Martha Louise Gray King was born in Van Alstyne, Texas on February 25, 1930 to the late Forrest Gray and Minnie Louise Swindle Gray. The family moved to Howe, Texas in 1930. She passed away on July 20, 2021 in Duncan, Oklahoma at Home with family.

She was a 1947 graduate of Howe High School. She was an honor student and active in many school activities including chorus, cheerleader and received The Danforth Leadership Award at the Graduation Commencement. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma. She completed graduate work at Central State University, Edmond, Oklahoma.

She married Don L. Adams on May 30, 1949. One son was born on August 30, 1950. The marriage ended in divorce in 1976.

E. Cliff King and Martha Adams were united in marriage in the Parlor of First Christian Church with Dr. James Smith officiating on March 18, 1978. It was a wonderful marriage of companionship, happiness, love and some challenging times for more than 43 years.

Martha was an educator in Kendrick, Oklahoma for one year, also one year in Oklahoma City Public Schools. She became a resident of Duncan, Oklahoma in 1953 and was an educator at the elementary schools of Duncan Public Schools for 27 years. She loved working with the children in each and every school. Her favorite quote about her teaching career was, “I may have tried and failed, but I never failed to try with all my students.”

She was an active member of First Christian Church in Duncan, Oklahoma for over 50 years. First Christian Church was a vital part of her life. She served as Deacon, Church School Teacher, CYF Co-Sponsor, Vacation Bible School Teacher, and Summer Camp Counselor for CYF and CHI Rho at Lake Texhoma Christian Camp and also Jr. Day Camp at Duncan Lake. She was Co-Chairman of Evangelism and Worship Committees and participated in Choir for 25 years. (At that period of time, “joyful noise” was needed and acceptable by God and Choir Leaders.)

She was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Key Women’s Teacher Organization for many years. She was a Charter Member of Chapter FJ of P.E.O. She was a past president, served as Southwest Area Chairman for Cotty College, owned and operated by The P.E.O. Sisterhood. It was a privilege to attend as Delegate to five Oklahoma State Chapter Conventions and as a Delegate to The International Chapter of The P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1991 in Omaha, Nebraska.

After retirement, she became a member of Hestian Study Club and Four Leaf Clover Club and served as president of each club. She also enjoyed active membership in Duncan Regional Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She served three years in the early organization of Friends Duncan Regional Hospital and as a volunteer for United Way.

Survivors include her husband, Cliff King of the home; one son, Larry Adams of Duncan; stepdaughter, Sheryl Spradling and husband Mark of Duncan; stepson, Steven King and wife Teresa of Rhome, Texas; five grandchildren: Ashley Adams of Duncan; Taylor Adams and wife Amanda of Duncan; Garett Adams and wife Chelse of Duncan; Jennifer Blackledge and husband Michael of Justin, Texas; Devin Oglesby and wife Ashley of Edmond; eight great grandchildren: Talyn, Ean, Leighton, Grayson, Caseley Adams, and Blaiden Timmins, all of Duncan; Abby Oglesby and Carson Oglesby of Edmond; and Caleb Blackledge of Justin; sisters-in-law, Betty King of St. Petersburg, Florida and Elma Jo Gray of Howe, Texas; brothers-in-law: Bill King and wife Pat of Oklahoma City and David King and wife Lajuana of Sun City, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Minnie Gray; four brothers: Wayne Gray, Billy Gray, Charlie Gray and Jimmy Gray; one sister, Mary Joyce Gray; sister-in-law, Janice Gray; father-in-law, Emery King; and mother-in-law, Opal King.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, July 23, at 10:00 A.M. at Duncan Municipal Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, July 23, at 11:00 A.M. at First Christian Church with Ron Savage officiating, assisted by Rev. Arnold Nelson, under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Taylor Adams, Garett Adams, Ashley Adams, Talyn Adams, Jay Adams, and Blaiden Timmins. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe and Vicki Vermedahl, Lawrence and Sharon Herndon, Terry and Kathy Snider, Robert O’Kelley, Members of Chapter FJ of P.E.O., Hestian Study Club, Harmony Church Sunday School Class, and my beloved 27 classes of students in Duncan Public Schools.
