Marylyn Esther VanDyke McMurtry, 85, of Montgomery, Texas, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021.
The family will receive friends from 9-10:30 on Saturday morning at the Velma Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Funeral services will be at 11am Saturday, October 2, 2021, at Velma Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kevin McKinley officiating. Interment will follow in New Velma Cemetery, under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home, Duncan, Oklahoma.
Marylyn was born July 12, 1936, in Long Branch, New Jersey, the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Brown VanDyke. She graduated from Long Branch High School in 1954. She attended Oklahoma A&M University where she met James McMurtry. They married June 2, 1956, in Velma, Oklahoma. Marylyn loved spending time with her family, especially the grandkids and great grandbabies. She enjoyed taking family vacations, Jersey corn, tomatoes from Jimmy’s garden, laughing with Sharon, working crossword puzzles with Karen, and all things OSU, especially football.
Marylyn is survived by her son, Jim McMurtry of Carthage, Texas; two daughters, Karen Hatler (Keith) of Montgomery, Texas, and Sharon McMurtry (Jay Fletchall) of Gary, Texas; grandchildren: Ryan (Leslie) of The Woodlands, Texas, Megan Nealy (Chris) of Carthage, Texas, Lauren Hickey (Will) of Midland, Texas, and Jordan Groce (Charlie) of Waco, Texas; two sisters-in-law whom she loved dearly, Sylvia England Mitchell (Bob) of Duncan and Anna McMurtry Speed (Art) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; adored nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Marylyn was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James McMurtry; and her three brothers, Charles Robert VanDyke, Thomas Edward VanDyke, and James Byron VanDyke.
