Peggie Mitchell Obituary
Peggie Lou Mitchell, aged 80, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026, in Weatherford, Texas. A 42-year resident of Marlow and Duncan, Oklahoma, Peggie was known for her love of education, her adventurous spirit, and her devotion to her family.
Peggie was born Peggie Lou Gordon on August 27, 1945, in Heber Springs, Arkansas, to William Eldridge Gordon and Dorothy Lou Gordon. An only child, she spent her childhood living in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Kansas. She graduated from Wichita East High School in Wichita, Kansas, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Wichita State University and a master's degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
A lifelong educator, Peggie dedicated more than three decades to teaching elementary school students. She began her teaching career in 1967 and retired in 2001. During her years in Kansas, she taught in the Wichita Public Schools (1967-1972), Scott City Public Schools (1974-1976), and Junction City Public Schools (1977-1979). In 1979, she moved with her family to Oklahoma and continued her passion for teaching at Bray-Doyle Public Schools, where she remained until her retirement. Throughout her career, she touched countless young lives through her commitment, encouragement, and love of learning.
Peggie was deeply involved in her profession and community. She served as President of the Stephens County Reading Council and the Bray-Doyle Education Association and was an active member of the National Education Association, the Oklahoma Education Association, and the Oklahoma Geographic Society. Her commitment to youth extended beyond the classroom through her involvement with Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America, where she later became a Commissioner and Leader Trainer.
In addition to teaching, Peggie was an entrepreneur. In 1992, she founded Double J Beef Jerky, which she operated while continuing her teaching career. Her success in the business led her to write a book on starting a beef jerky business. The venture proved life-changing in more ways than one. During a routine inspection of her business, she met Jerry Allen Mitchell, the meat inspector assigned to her facility. What began as a professional acquaintance quickly became a lasting romance, and the two were married in New Mexico on July 22, 1997.
Peggie and Jerry shared a passion for travel, birdwatching, and the outdoors. As avid birders, they traveled throughout the United States in pursuit of new species and memorable adventures. They also shared a love of horses and often traveled with them as well. When at home, Peggie found joy in reading, sewing, and gardening.
Peggie was preceded in death by her parents, William Eldridge Gordon and Dorothy Lou Gordon, and by her beloved husband, Jerry Allen Mitchell, Sr.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her sons, Justin Laurence Brammer of Duncan, Oklahoma, and John William Brammer and his wife, Mary, of Aledo, Texas; her stepsons, Jerry Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Shelley, of Marlow, Oklahoma, and Fred Mitchell and his wife, Tina, of Vernal, Utah; and her grandchildren, Rylan Brammer and wife Maddie, Kaylee Brammer and wife Janae, John N. Brammer, Jonah Brammer; and her step grandchildren, Colt Mitchell, Ryder Mitchell, Ethan Mitchell, and Jesse Mitchell. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Waylon Huffman and Beckett Brammer.
Peggie's life was defined by her love of learning, her dedication to service, and the deep devotion she showed to those she loved. Her influence will continue to live on through the countless students she taught, the family she treasured, and the many lives she touched along the way.
Peggie will be laid to rest at Marlow Cemetery in Marlow, Oklahoma, beside her beloved husband, Jerry Allen Mitchell, Sr., and near her parents, William and Dorothy Gordon.
