Petra Nunez Obituary

Petra Arteaga Nunez, of Duncan, Oklahoma, was born June 29, 1935 in Mexico to Jesus Arteaga Hermosillo and Vita Bugarin Cortés. She passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, in Duncan. She was 87.

Her rosary service will be Tuesday, May 30, at 6:30 P.M. in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel (a live stream of the rosary service will be available by going to her obituary at www.whittfh.com). A Mass Celebration is planned for Wednesday, May 31, at 10:00 A.M. at the Assumption Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Neiro, of Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Pauls Valley, officiating and assisted by Deacon Mark Gildon and Deacon Manuel Garcia. Serving as pallbearers are Felix Galvan, Zachary Lipscomb, Joe Galvan, Felix Gilbert Galvan, Aiden J. Tuley, Brian Lipscomb, Noah J. Galvan and Landon Marshall. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home, Duncan.

Petra grew up in Mexico where she helped raise her 12 brothers and sisters. She took care of her family. She married Alvaro Nunez on January 9, 1966 at Plainview, Texas. They had four children - Alvaro Jr., Petra, Jose Salvador, and Maria Elena. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1996.

She loved cooking. She made authentic burritos and flour tortillas. She is leaving a legacy of her Mexican food in Plainview, Texas. She was faithful in reading the Bible and Rosary devotional daily. She faithfully prayed for her family. She enjoyed watching the Catholic Channel on television. She would have given her life for anyone. She enjoyed walking outdoors and gardening, both flowers and vegetables. Petra was an amazing woman, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Petra is survived by two children: Alvaro Nunez Jr. of Fairmont, West Virginia, Petra Nunez and Felix Galvan of Wanette, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Joe Galvan, Victoria Lipscomb, Felix Galvan Jr., Maria Galvan, Natalie Marshall, Moses Nunez, Petra Elena Nunez, Lupe Gonzalez, Janie Gonzalez, Anthony Nunez; great grandchildren: Brayden N. Lewis; Zachary and Arianna M. Lipscomb; Aiden J. Tuley; Noah Galvan; Manala and Brianna Gamblin; Amaris and Grayson Galvan; Laynee and Isabella Marshall; Gemma Galvan; Madelyn Mae and Cadence Nunez; Kevin, Amorellia, Alejandro, TJ, Matthew, Jazmine, and Baby G Antunez. She is also survived by her brothers: Luis Arteaga of Mexico, Jose Arteaga of Illinois; and her sisters: Maria De Jesus, Lupita Hermosillo Arteaga, Angelina Arteaga, and Marcelina Arteaga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvaro Nunez; son, Jose Salvador Nunez; daughter, Maria Elena Nunez; brothers: Angel Arteaga, Guadalupe Arteaga, Manuel Arteaga; and sisters: Virginia Perez, Maria Concepcion Perez, and Cruz Arteaga.
