R. Clyde "RC" Shipley Obituary

R. Clyde "R.C." Shipley was born in Drexel, Missouri on June 5, 1940, to Clyde and LaVerna (VanMeter) Shipley. He passed away on Thursday, October 12, in Duncan at the age of 83.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, October 21, at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home/Oakcrest Cremation Center.

After graduating from Drexel High School, R.C. he received his Bachelor's Degree from Missouri Valley College and graduated from Central Missouri State with a Master's Degree. Along with teaching and serving as principal, R.C. had a very successful coaching career. While coaching basketball at two Missouri high schools, his record was 146 wins and 39 losses with 2 state tournament appearances. R.C. coached at the collegiate level for Missouri Southern State College with a record of 163 wins and 77 losses and 3 national tournament appearances. He then served as assistant head coach for Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. He helped coach teams to 2 national tournament appearances. In the 1978-1979 season, the team made it to the semifinals and then in the 1979-1980 season all the way to the National Championship. They were ranked nationally in the top five for 3 years.

Before retiring, R.C. mentored many principals, coaches, and superintendents not to mention the countless students and athletes that he came into contact with. He empowered people to believe in themselves and be better than they thought they could be. He was steadfast in his ideas and once his mind was set on what was right there was no changing his way of thinking.

When not coaching or teaching, R.C. enjoyed playing golf and building things. He will be missed by all who knew him.

R.C. was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, DeLana Shipley; and nephew, Jacob Shipley.
