Rose Shaw Obituary

Rose Marie Shaw of Apache, Oklahoma passed away on October 10th, 2019, at the age of 85. She was born on October 3rd, 1934, in Apache, Oklahoma. She graduated from Apache High School in 1952, Cameron State Agriculture and Mechanical Junior College in 1954 with an Associate’s Degree in Arts and Science, Oklahoma College for Women with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology in 1956, and the University of Oklahoma with a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1967.

She was a caseworker for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services in Caddo County, Jefferson County and Grady County. She was the County Administrator for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services for McIntosh County. After she concluded her career with the State of Oklahoma, she started her career with the Anadarko Agency Bureau of Indian Affairs, where she served as a Supervisory Social Worker until her retirement.

She served in numerous professional and civic organizations which included National Association of Social Workers, Academy of Certified Social Workers, Licensed Social Worker (Clinical and Administration), Oklahoma Health and Welfare Association (offices held Board of Directors – 1978 through 1984), Southwest Area Oklahoma Health and Welfare Association, Secretary, Appointment to Area Nine Council on Juvenile Delinquency, Oklahoma Department of Institutions, Social and Rehabilitative Services, Secretary 1970-1971; Subcommittee Chairman, 1971-1972; National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Apache Alumni Association, Apache Area Genealogical Society, Apache Historical Society, Southwest Oklahoma Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Apache Chapter No. 380 and Order of the Eastern Star (past Worthy Matron). She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Apache and also attended the Elgin Apache Cowboy Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. E.L. Inman, her mother, Marie Inman, and her brother, Edward Lee Inman, Jr. She is survived by one son, Jeff Shaw and his wife, Lisa of Lawton, granddaughters, Rachel Marie Shaw of Oklahoma City and Meredith Shaw, of Oklahoma City.

As a product of the 1930s with a five bedroom house, a double car garage, a storage room and two attics, she never met a household item that she could part with. A local historian, she immersed herself in learning all she could about the early days of Apache and shared this local lore with the community at events and celebrations. Meticulous in her record keeping, her journals memorialized conversations with her cherished granddaughters. Three-year old Meredith once wanted to know why she was not in her Mom and Dad’s wedding pictures. She was told that she had not been born yet. To which she replied, why hadn’t she been born yet? Mommā’s record goes on to reflect that Mere Mere, was told that she would have to take that up with her parents. A soft touch for a stray dog named Maggie, she frequently combed-out the double coated K-9 and generated enough fur to knit a sweater. As a divorced, single Mom in the 1960s, she taught life lessons by example and not by words: get a good education, go to work every day, go to church on Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday evening, be fair and honest with others and give back to the community.
