Vera Bay (Britt) Mathwich 94 yrs.
December 4th, 1930 -March 30th, 2025
Vera passed quietly at her home in Duncan, OK surrounded by family. She is preceded in death by parents Jess and Irene Amy Britt, aunt Jewel Mitchell, sisters Jesse Louise Britt and Barbara Britt Burnham.
Vera grew up on a ranch north of Clovis, New Mexico graduating from Clovis High School in 1948. She went on to receive her BA and MA from Eastern New Mexico University becoming the first college graduate in her family.
She taught elementary school in Los Alamos, NM, Del Rio, TX, Clinton, OK, and Portales, NM before settling into the Clovis school system for over 30 years. As a teacher, "Mrs. Mathwich" influenced the lives of hundreds of students, many still in Clovis who stayed in touch over the years.
For Vera, the most important things in life were her religion, family, and friends. She enjoyed being part of any and all events, including bridge with friends, parties and church outings. She traveled extensively throughout Europe and the entire United States with her daughter-in-law Mary and was still on the go visiting her kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren well into her 90s.
Vera is survived by her sister Lillian Britt Jones, children Britt and wife Mary, Brian and wife Andrea, and Amy. Grandchildren: Julie, Nicole, Erica, Brian, Heather, Hayden and Hunter. Great-grandchildren, Sunshine, Tyme, Warren, Alma, Liam, Samuel, Elle, Emma and Bruno. Nieces and nephews: Sabra, Jess, David and Kerrie, Carley, Meghan and Brittnee. Also, many friends in Clovis, notably Sammye and Shane May.
In her later years, Vera was cared for by her daughter Amy in Duncan, Ok. Amy received assistance from her daughter Heather, grandson, Warren, hospice caregivers: Leticia and Jilly, and many others in the Duncan community to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.
Service and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday April 26th, 2025, at 1pm. The service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church 1117 N. Main St. Clovis NM 88101 and will be followed by a reception in the same location.
