Vera Ross Obituary
Vera Ellen (Douglas) Ross passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2019, in Duncan at the age of 87. She was born November 20, 1931, in Hoxie, Kansas, to Ernest and Flora Marion (Marsh) Douglas.
A memorial service is scheduled for September 21, at 11:00 A.M. at the Marlow Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Terra Sisco officiating. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home/Oakcrest Cremation Center.
Vera attended Moran High School in Kansas, where she was a trumpeter and baton twirler. She married Lawrence Roy Ross in Lamar, Colorado, on June 10, 1948. She was a dedicated homemaker and mother to five children – Susan, Alan, Beverly, Pamela, and Vicki.
She loved to fish, hunt, and travel. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was an avid reader. She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Marlow.
Vera is survived by her children: Susan K. Ross of Marlow, Alan D. and wife Brenda Ross of Duncan, Beverly A. Newsom of Bethany, Pamela J. and husband Rick Kunc of Cumming, GA, Vicki L. Wheeless and husband Don Shaw of Tempe, AZ; grandchildren: Laurie Crow and husband Ron South, Rachel Sigman, Michael Ross, Sarah Newsom, Patrick Kunc, Laura Ellyn and husband James Headley, Audrey Elizabeth and husband Austin Brooks, Ross Elliot Wheeless; great grandchildren: Kassie and Kendall Phillips, Alixzandrea, Jacob, Willow, and Olivia Sigman, Iszzy Newsom, Aurora and Juanito Figueroa-Newsom; brothers, Gaylon Paynter of Eugene, OR and Elvin Paynter of Salem, Oregon; sisters, Anita Uland of Lewisburg, TN, Twyla Paynter of Salem OR, Coreen Walters of Salem, OR; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Ross; parents, Ernest and Flora Douglas; and sister, Virginia Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marlow Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home in Denton, TX, and St. Judes Children Hospital.
