Willa Mae Lowe

Willa Mae Lowe, 93, of Duncan, went to her heavenly home with her beloved son, Craig, by her side on Monday, February 10, 2025. She was born July 12, 1931 in Waurika, Oklahoma to William "Bill" Charles and Lillie Mae "Tot" (Allen) Campbell.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, February 14, at Whitt Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 P.M. A funeral service is planned for 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 15, at New Hope Baptist Church West with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery with Tommy McCasland III, Cameron McCasland, Bridger McCasland, Mat Woods, Pewee Copeland, and Tony Graves serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Charlie Hays, Buddy Campbell, and Henry Bonney.

Willa Mae, an only child, attended Sugden public schools where she was very active participating as a cheerleader, a guard on the girls' basketball team, active member of the First Methodist Church and MYF of Sugden, OK and Ardmore district, challenger on the debate team, Class President and Valedictorian of her senior class. She attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman and Draughn's Business School in Wichita Falls, TX, receiving her Accounting Degree. Upon graduation, she began working in the Jefferson County Courthouse, County Superintendent's Office located in Waurika, ordering all books, supplies and doing all budgeting for each ISD in Jefferson County. On July 7, 1951, Willa Mae married Edwin "Ed" M. Lowe in Waurika before moving to Duncan one year later. They were married for 67 years at the time of Ed's death on September 15, 2017.

Willa Mae was an avid reader of current events both political and non-political, homemaker, seamstress for the family, gardener, Church Secretary and Treasurer at Wesley United Methodist Church in Duncan for 7 years and a current member of the New Hope Baptist Church. Willa Mae was also an active member of Maranatha's Circle, Builders Class, the Magna Carta, DAR-Daughters of the American Revolution, Prairie House, and the Circuit Riders of PSO/AEP. She was also an undocumented Chickasaw and Cherokee Indian from both grandmothers, one on the Campbell and one on the Allen side of the family.

Her main goal and focus, as well as Ed's, was improving and striving for a better community and a more advanced state of the art, Duncan Regional Hospital - DRH - for the future growth and sustainability for the Duncan and Stephens County Community. While serving as volunteer from 1982 until 2021, she acquired the status of "Life Member" along with Ed. Willa Mae also obtained the greatest number of recorded hours of any volunteer to date, racking up over 11,000 hours of recorded service, not including all those years prior, when hours worked were not recorded. Living three blocks from the hospital, on many "bad and icy days," she was called over when others were unable to go. One thing she really enjoyed was when the Candy Stripers participated in helping and the teaching process was a forte for her along with the training of new volunteers as they came on board. There were many times behind the scenes of giving and participation in action that she and Ed were involved which were unknown to the majority and that is the way she preferred. Other organizations that she and Ed were both very involved with were the Foreman Prairie House and Boys State for the American Legion Post #59, located in Duncan..

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Tot Campbell; husband, Ed M. Lowe; aunts: Della Campbell Countiss and husband, Hosea Denton Countiss, Josie (Jane) J. Campbell Cleaver; and cousin, Sam Countiss and his wife Louise Swofford Countiss.

Surviving family is an only child, son, E. Craig Lowe of Duncan; and cousin, Daniel (Danny a/k/a Dan) Countiss and wife Kathy (Katt) Countiss of Medina, TX, formerly of Corpus Christi, TX.
